Resident Conductor


Karl B. Cepeda has been Cantate’s Resident Conductor since 2005. As a founding member and officer, Karl is one of the few singers who has made music with Cantate since its beginning. Karl began his long musical journey at the Dulce Nombre de Maria Hagatna Cathedral Basilica in 1995 as a member of Magnificat, the cathedral’s youth choir. From 1998 to 1999 he directed the choir until he decided to focus more on his studies at the University of Guam. He has traveled the world and sung in festivals and concerts in Japan, Australia, China, New York, San Franscisco, Vienna, Prague, and Costa Rica.

As a conductor, he has performed Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’ and Morten Lauridsen’s ‘Lux Aeterna.’  His travels and dedication to music and education have resulted in countless opportunities to work with renowned directors such as James Jordan, Jerry Blackstone, Paul Rardin, Paul Salamunovich, Dr. Lisa Lutter and Dr. Weston Noble.

In 2005, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Guam as a double major in Fine Arts/Music and Communications/Journalism. Past teaching positions include Department Head of Special Subjects at the Santa Barbara Catholic School where he taught Music and Language Arts and conducted the Santa Barbara Catholic School Honor Choir. Karl was awarded the Santa Barbara Catholic School 2013-14 Teacher of the Year and The Archbishop Anthony S. Apuron Servus Tuus Award for Most Outstanding Catholic Elementary School Teacher.  Currently Karl teaches Music and conducts choir at the Father Duenas Memorial School.
